Walnut (Juglans regia L.) is a deciduous tree in the walnut family. It has a relatively short trunk and broad canopy; young branches are gray-green and hairless; leaflets are elliptical to long-elliptical; fruit clusters are short; fruits are nearly spherical and hairless; the shell is slightly wrinkled with a short tip; the septum is thin with no internal cavities; the inner seed coat has irregular gaps. Flowering occurs in May and fruiting in October. The name "walnut" is explained by Li Shizhen in the "Compendium of Materia Medica" as "this fruit has a green skin, and its shape resembles a peach, so it is called walnut, as 'Hu' is a term for the seed."
